When I entered military service, I underestimated the expectations I would face for how I carried myself. This expectation was made clear when I realized I couldn’t keep a straight face when I found something funny—including when the Fort Benning drill instructors came out with the ferocity of hungry piranhas. The drill instructors noticed my face turning into a smile and unleashed their worst, and my ranger gave me the nickname Smiley. Now twenty years later, I am happy to say that I have retained my Smiley spirit, but can turn the smile inward when needed.
