Cheers to Owens-Illinois for receiving the Keep America Beautiful 2018 Vision for America Award
I wanted to take a moment to congratulate to Owens-Illinois Inc, known as O-I, for receiving the Keep America Beautiful 2018 Vision for America Award.
America’s brewers, beer importers, and industry suppliers understand that we only have one planet, and we all must be good stewards so we can ensure the next generation inherits a healthy and vibrant world. For more than a century, O-I has been crafting pure, sustainable, brand-building glass packaging for many of the world’s best-known food and beverage brands, including the beer industry. Glass bottles are vitally important to the beer industry; last year nearly one-third of all beer volume in the United States and almost two-thirds of above premium segment volume were packaged in glass bottles.
O-I, like other companies in the beer industry, is passionately dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural world. O-I has demonstrated this dedication by becoming the first food and beverage packaging company to achieve a gold rating in material health on the Cradle to Cradle Product Scorecard. Nearly 90 percent of O-I’ glass operations were certified across five product categories: material health, material reutilization, water stewardship, renewable energy use, and social fairness.
And O-I remains focused on improving their sustainability goals in the future both in reducing the energy they consume and increasing the amount of recycled material the glass they produce. Owens-Ilinois has set a goal of a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 with a 10% interim target reduction of 10% by 2025, and they are committed to increasing the global average of post-consumer recycled content in their products to 50% by 2025. In 2017 38% of the glass they manufactured consisted of post-consumer recycled content. The result is both cleaner air as well as reducing the amount of waste in our world’s landfills.
So let’s raise a glass bottle to O-I. Cheers to their dedication to protecting and preserving our environment now and for generations to come.
